Why are they called ';a PAIR of hair straighteners'; when there's only one?!?

In general, any tool made of two hinged parts is called a pair, even after they are put together. Hence pliers, scissors, calipers etc. (The name used in Sheffield, where scissors were traditionally made, for the person who puts together the two halves of a pair of scissors is a ';puttertogetherer';)

There is one interesting exception to this rule: ';forceps';. It is confusing. It looks like a plural because it ends in an ';s';, but that is because it comes straight from Latin. It is wrong to talk about ';a pair of forceps';. If you have two of these tools, you should say ';a pair of forcipes';Why are they called ';a PAIR of hair straighteners'; when there's only one?!?
two plates.

its like a pair of pants. there is only one garment, but 2 leg holes.

A pair of glasses. only one item, but 2 lenses.

Its all thanks to the stupid language we call englishWhy are they called ';a PAIR of hair straighteners'; when there's only one?!?
Same as pair of trousers, glasses, scissors, tweezers, etc, etc....
maybe they are referring to the plates , as there are 2 plates and its the plates that straightenn the hair ';a pair of straighteners';
cos there is two plates to straighten hair
Same reason as we have pairs of scissors, tongs, trousers, tights, knickers, etc etc
I don't care if they are a pair, as long as they straighten my hair.:-)
i think is cuz theres two plates
2 plates
why is a pair of pants called a pair of pants when theres only one...the world will never know..
two plates perhaps?!
sometimes they say a pair like 4 exxample 1 pair of shoes coming right up!!
because there are two straightening plates hense a pair
