Get a ceramic one and it won't damage your hair that badly. As for the heat, the good irons have dials to turn the heat up or down, start low and work your self up. Once you get the hang of it you'll love them.
OH! And don't forget to use the heat ';protection'; spray.
Joico makes a REALLY good one.Hair straighteners, are they easy to use, how hot do they get, are they safe to use?

What type of hair do you have?
Depending on the coarsness of your hair you will need a hotter Iron.
A lot of irons actually have temperature settings, if you have fine, thin hair, you only need it to go to about 200-220 degrees. If you have medium to normal hair all you need is 220-300 degrees, and for thick coarse hair you need anywhere from 300-400 degrees.
There are also other variables to worry about when using a flat iron also, like what kind of plates it has, what kind of heat source is it using, will it leave you hair dry or shiny, etc.
email me if you would like more information about flat irons, I can help you find what you are looking for.

yes, they are easy to use. I have had mine for over 4 years, and it was from Walgreens. It is a Vidal Sasson one, although I would reccomend upgrading a bit. They get pretty hot. The intensity ranges from a 1-20. I would use level 15.In regards to safety, I am prone to being clumsy at times, and have yet to burn my self. Try though to give your hair a break though from a straightening iron every once in a while, as it causes eventual breakage.
