Going to Europe? I heard hair straighteners don't work even with an adapter?

I heard this on a travel channel. So are any hair straighteners able to be converted?

do not waste your time if you already know they can't be converted. i brought my sedu iron and it worked with the converter.. but i also tried to use my hair dryer which i wasn't sure about and blew the fuse on the whole floor of the hotel. don't risk it, not worth it.
