How did people live without hair straighteners?

my hair is up to my shoulders,i want to grow it, but i use a hair straightener quite often and get split ends, then i have to cut it and then it is all over again. i am trying not to use it that often, but my hair is horrible when it is not styled, so i have to do it for work.

is there a way out of this circle? how did people suriveve without straighteners before? How did people live without hair straighteners?
I survive without straightners all the time

What you look like isnt everything. How did people live without hair straighteners?
I do in fact i never straighten!! I have perfectly straight hair but it annoying.

Ya know you should try a different style like using hair mouse and scrunching it after you have washed your hair. Straighting can ruin your hair!! So be careful. Do a mixture and your hair should be better.
they didnt. long live ghd!

also recommend buying protective products for your hair
in superdrug and many other stores you can get pure coconut oil its a hard substance which you rub between ur palms 2 make soft and then run it thorugh yout hair it rly staightens it and protects it. it keeps my hair staight and my hair is naturally very wavy.

also you could try clip in extensions for temporary hair length they are very cheap xxx
i dnt know.the more gadgets you bring out the more we think we need them.its a controlled system from them[whoever] that we are so used to relying on technologhy for everything that one day there will be a day when everything will collapse and we will have to start again..without computers, straightners, tv, etc....
i never straighten my hair and its healthy and volumous
can i just say to 'mandy' that this question wasnt directed at your wonderful 'healthy' and 'volumous' hair.. dont be so arrogant!

anyway.. in the olden days people used an iron to straighten their hair.

but in cave man times i guess they were just stuck lol

you can get special serums and stuff that protect your hair from the heat so you dont get as many split ends.

and conditioners that make your hair smoother so you might not have to straighten.

hope this helped.
well i have no idea how ppl used to live with out straighteners but i use myn almost every day. i ended up with horrible split ends. I got myn cut and then i bought a shampoo for split end and dont use my iron as much but still often. i've done this for a few months and so far no split ends. you can try it but no garentee, it worked for me tho. hope i helped.
Well Carole from BB manages quite well(!)
Try curling it, or wearing it in braids.
i think people might have survived without hair straightners once upon a time as no-one had electric once
well i dont know what kind of hair you have but why dont you try going to the salon and have them starighten it for you (far as a chemical straighter) Some staighters actually make your hair stronger, ask your sylist good luck!
I have a similar problem, and to try and stop the split and dry ends, I don't straighten my hair every week. Also, unless I'm in a hurry, I usually try to let my hair dry naturally, rather than a dryer. I also use a product from Aveda, called Hang Straight. You put it on towel dried hair and then blow dry (but I usually don't) and it protects and conditions the hair.

If I don't use the straighteners but have used the Hang Straight, my hair is straighter and less ';bitty'; than if I've put nothing on it. Also, if I do use the straighteners, I've found that if I have them on the highest setting, I don't need to use them for as long - so there's less direct and repetitive contact with the heat

Another thing is to speak to your hairdresser and explain the situation. He/she might then suggest that they not take all the split ends off this time, and then you go back in the recommended 6-8 weeks (rather than leaving it for about 6 months, when my split ends seemed to have travelled half way up my head - horrors!) for another short trim, and then you might only lose about 1.5cm at a time, rather than a couple of inches off the length if you tried to get rid of them all at once.
they literally ironed it, on a table, between sheets of brown paper to protect their hair from getting burnt.
i survive without straightners every single day. i only use my GHDS for special occasions. you could try getting some really nice clips and pinning back some of your hair and using some really special makeup. stop concentrating on your hair so much and maybe more on your face. use really nice good smelling shampoo i like coconut smelling ones.
people could still LIVE with unstyled hair. you could talk to your hair stylist for help with your hair tho.
the funny thing is i use to put my head on the ironing board and get my husband to place my hair out gently with a towel over it and iron it that way no split ends still do it now lol some people think im potty but it works
actually they did use to use metal straighteners ( owww) before ceramic heated in a fire or with some coals and then used the same way as our straigteners we have now! hope this helped!
im going thru the same thing...but ive learned to just deal with my curls and now i actually like them...and now my hair has grown like 2 inches and its much healthier...good luck!
a hot iron
Why don't you try putting it up for work or when you're not going out, I use a springy clip thing to put mine up for work rather than straighten it every day and just straighten the fringy type bits that are down as they're gonna get cut anyway.
they wrap their hair around their head using bobby pins. this straightens the hair temporarily

try to go natural with just curls once a while to give ur hair a break
you can find a help in any salon.
